Yew Chuan Claypot Rice has been open for 20+ years and is a popular shop in the area along Beach Road. Located at Golden Mile Food Centre, the owner learnt to cook claypot rice by working at the Geylang Claypot Rice store because his children loved it. He then set out to open his very own store after learning the skills and mastering the dish.

We saw a new staff helping to prepare and cook the claypot, previously it was just the husband and wife duo. When you come by you’ll still be faced with a queue where they will ask you for your order and your table number so you may comfortably wait at your table.

With a large amount of claypot stacked at the side, they are obviously ready to face a large number of servings and orders through the day. We ordered a large claypot chicken rice and it took almost 30 minutes to come, so do expect an approximate 30 minutes wait for your order.

Claypot Chicken Rice (5 pax – 五人份) ($33)
Their claypot chicken rice had rice, chicken, vegetables, preserved sausages and salted fish all together in a clay pot. The claypot rice came unmixed so you’d have to mix the pot up yourself, do try to mix it up quickly before it starts charring along the side as the claypot would still be hot.

Claypot Chicken Rice Mixed
The claypot was super fragrant with a slight smoky flavour to it and if you mix it well, you’d be able to get charred bits mixed in together with the normal rice. Their crispiness added to the texture of the dish with a slightly bitter char taste that stood out against the sweetness of the claypot sauce.

They were extremely generous with the chicken as many large chunks filled the claypot. The chicken was especially tender and juicy, being savoury and sweet at the same time. The preserved sausages and salted fish added a chewy and salty contrast to the dish. The vegetables provided a fresh and moist mouthfeel that helped to reduce the greasiness of the dish.

Yew Chuan Claypot Rice is a staple that we had visited many times before and they did not disappoint. If you’re in Golden Mile Food Centre, do pay them a visit and they’ll surely be worth the wait. Special mention to the chicken which was really soft and tender and had such a flavourful burst in our mouths.
