The Tree Cafe – A Steal of a Deal Right Smack at Dhoby Ghaut & Halal Too!

The Tree Cafe is a quaint and cozy cafe specialising in Western and Asian-fusion food. Located at the 2nd floor of The Cathay, it’s in a central location and is easily accessible. Being a halal cafe, it doesn’t serve any pork, but the selection is large enough for you to not even notice it!

The cafe is actually quite big with lots of tables around, being able to accommodate quite a lot of people. When we headed here on a Saturday afternoon, it was about 90% occupied. If you’re a student and are looking for somewhere to have a decent meal whilst not spending too much, you’d be happy to know that they have a $2 off for students regardless of day or time.

Set A Combo ($3.50) – Ice Lemon Tea / Set B Combo ($5.50) – Coke Float
With a choice to upgrade the mains to set, we took the opportunity to upgrade it to get an additional drink and mushroom soup. The drinks were based on your combo type, with the basic combo giving you ice lemon tea and mushroom soup, whilst the premium combo provides you with a choice of any drinks on their menu and mushroom soup. We got ice lemon tea and coke float as drinks!

Set A Combo ($3.50) / Set B Combo ($5.50) – Mushroom Soup
The mushroom soup within the combo set had a light fragrance and a gentle taste to it. The soup was lightly garnished and not too strong with bits of mushroom within, which was sufficient to keep you satisfied whilst waiting for your food to come. 

Rock Honey Chicken ($11.50)
The food didn’t take long to come, with the buzzer ringing just as we were finishing our mushroom soup. We had Rock Honey Chicken together with salad and coleslaw. The chicken was sweet and tender, with only the smaller corners forming a little crust as they were slightly overcooked. 

2 Sides – Onion Rings and Coleslaw
The mains comes with 2 sides for which there is a large range of selection you can choose from. With the Crispy Chicken, we had onion rings and coleslaw as sides. The crispy chicken was crisp and tender, with the chicken cooked evenly and having a nice crunchy skin.

Overall, the cafe here has a wide selection of food and provides great value with the combo set as well. If you’re a student, having the $2 off helps make it even more affordable. Furthermore, the food here is halal certified and you may bring your Malay friends here to enjoy and chill as well! With not many quality affordable food choices around town, this works as a great choice to drop by when you’re in the area and on a light budget.
