They are known for their delicious and authentic Jjajangmyeon, a type of Chinese-Korean noodle dish made with a black bean sauce, onions, and vegetables. The dish is a staple of Chinese-Korean cuisine and is considered a comfort food for many.
The menu at OBBA Jjajang is simple, but it’s all about the Jjajangmyeon, the star of the restaurant. The portions are generous, and the prices are affordable, making it a great spot for a casual meal or a quick bite. The restaurant also has a casual and welcoming atmosphere, and the staff are friendly, making it a great place to enjoy a meal with friends or family.
Jajangmyeon – $14
We ordered the Obba Set A ($56), consisting of jjajangmyeon, jjampong and tangsuyuk. The first dish to arrive was jjajangmyeon, also commonly known as black bean noodles. As soon as the dish arrived, the aroma of the savoury black bean sauce filled my nostrils and made my mouth water.
The black bean sauce was rich, with a deep flavour that was perfectly balanced between sweet and salty. The cucumber added a welcome crunch and freshness to the dish, whilst the onions were well mixed throughout the dish.
The noodles themselves were cooked perfectly, with just the right amount of chewiness. They were coated in thick black bean sauce. The sauce stuck to the noodles well, making each bite a delicious and satisfying experience. The flavours are bold and the texture is perfect, making it hard not to enjoy it. It’s easy to understand why it’s a favourite among locals and tourists alike.
Jjamppong – $18
The next dish we ordered was jjampong, a spicy seafood noodle soup dish. We could feel the spiciness from just the aroma alone. The broth was loaded with a large variety of seafood and vegetables, adding a great depth of flavour and texture. The seafood was fresh and had a light hint of sweetness whilst the vegetables added a crunchy texture.
The noodles were cooked al dente, with a light chewiness. The broth was rich and flavourful, with a perfect balance of spiciness and savouriness. They were nicely coated in the broth, making each bite a nice blend of heat and saltiness, it had a nice kick to it but not overpowering.
Chewy Tangsuyuk (Small) – $30
The last dish in the set was tangsuyuk, a sweet and sour crispy pork dish. The pork was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. It was coated in a light batter that added a gentle crunch to the dish. The sauce was well balanced, with a nice sweetness and tanginess permeating the dish. The dish also included some vegetables like onions, cucumbers and lotus roots that added a nice crunch and a refreshing taste.
We had the dish together with the jjajangmyeon and the jjampong. The sweetness and tanginess of the tangsuyuk complemented well with the two noodle dishes. They served to balance out the strong flavours of the black bean sauce and the spicy seafood soup.
