Confession time, I have lost count of how many evenings I have spent circling Serangoon, telling myself I will just grab something quick at NEX. That plan never holds. NEX Food is a playground for hungry easties, and the choices can feel endless. From the crackling soy garlic wings at JINJJA Chicken, to a molten flood of demi-glace over curry rice at Monster Curry, or a custom burrito bowl stacked at Guzman y Gomez, each stop has its own pull. I have queued, sweated, and happily overeaten to separate hype from real flavour, and here is where it gets interesting. Some stalls surprise you when you least expect it.

Best Food Places In NEX
1. JINJJA Chicken
The date night crowd at NEX carries a steady buzz, couples sharing baskets and families squeezing in extra chairs, while the aroma of fried chicken cuts cleanly through the noise. After long days on the road, I still find myself detouring here with a notebook in my pocket, curious to see if the standard holds. It usually does. The kitchen moves with consistency, and the turnover keeps everything fresh.
The Korean Fried Chicken (soy garlic or spicy wings) remains the anchor. Each piece is double fried for a thick, crackling crust, the sauce clinging evenly to every ridge. Soy garlic delivers a balanced sweet and savoury glaze, while the spicy version builds heat gradually instead of hitting all at once. The Jjajangmyeon offers steady comfort, glossy black bean sauce coating the noodles properly, rich and savoury without tipping into sweetness. For something lighter, the Parmesan Wings come dusted with a fine, salty cheese powder, less messy and easy before a film. For a halal Korean meal in Serangoon, this spot stays reliable, filling, and fairly priced.

2. Monster Curry
The first time I saw the queue curling outside Monster Curry at NEX, I genuinely wondered what was happening. It looked like a giveaway. Instead, it was simply Serangoon regulars lining up for their curry fix. I stopped by after a long logistics run, notebook still in my pocket, and the aroma of their two-day demi-glace gravy hit immediately. Rich, savoury and slightly sweet, it lingered in the air even before I reached the counter.
The Pork Katsu Curry is the heavyweight order. Thick, glossy curry made from 14 vegetables and spices blankets the rice, topped with a generously sized cutlet fried to a crisp. The crust shatters cleanly, revealing juicy meat within, and the spice level can be adjusted to a proper sweat-inducing kick. The Fish Fillet Curry is lighter but no less satisfying, with golden batter, flaky flesh and a clean finish that carries the velvety sauce beautifully. Come hungry with friends and share the Super Monster Combo, a hearty spread of meats and omelette built for two or three. The steady queue speaks for its consistency.

3. GUZMAN Y GOMEZ
Right outside Serangoon MRT station at NEX, the after work crowd moves like clockwork. Students in uniform weave past office staff loosening their ties, all searching for something fast yet satisfying. I usually detour to Guzman y Gomez for the Burrito Bowl. The first scoop is fragrant with fluffy rice and smoky pulled beef, slow marinated for 24 hours until tender. Bright salsa cuts through the richness, while creamy guacamole rounds everything out. Even the mini bowl, priced under ten dollars, fills me up more reliably than some economy rice plates.
When I want something bolder, the Rendang Chicken Bowl delivers. Generous chunks of chicken come coated in a thick, lemak sauce with a steady, familiar heat that lingers. It may be Mexican in format, but the flavour carries a comforting kampung warmth. I finish with Churros, crisp on the outside and soft within, dipped into dense chocolate while watching the evening crowd stream by. Working in logistics means I eat across Singapore, yet this Serangoon stop reminds me that routine meals can still surprise with confident, full flavoured cooking.

4. A HOT HIDEOUT
The dinner crowd at NEX moves like a hungry wave, students in uniforms, parents corralling children, and office workers searching for something shiok after work. Tucked among the usual kopitiam staples, A Hot Hideout draws a steady queue when mala cravings strike. Their Mala Collagen Soup is the clear star. The broth arrives milky and fragrant, the numbing heat creeping in gently before blooming at the back of the tongue. Medium spice offers enough fire to perk you up while staying smooth and full-bodied, coating each strand of springy noodles that hold their bite even during the peak-hour rush. Add the Scrambled Eggs and the silky, buttery folds temper the spice beautifully, an unexpected but thoughtful touch for a heartland-style mala bowl.
The Fried Potato & Lotus Root Chips bring contrast, thin and crackly like old-school mama shop snacks, adding crunch between mouthfuls. Having grown up around Serangoon and now spending workdays driving across Singapore in search of good kopi, I appreciate consistency. For a mall setting, this spot delivers solid flavour and reliable execution.

5. PUTIEN 莆田
At PUTIEN (NEX), the regular’s move is simple. Arrive ten minutes before the dinner crowd, order promptly, and settle in just as families begin streaming through the doors. Having worked nearby in logistics, I have dropped in more times than I can count, and this outlet runs with steady precision even when the mall is at its busiest.
The PUTIEN Lor Mee is always my first recommendation. Thick, silky gravy clings to springy noodles, with tender pork belly, prawns, and clams lending a deep, slow-braised sweetness. It is hearty but never jelak, a bowl that encourages you to slow down and savour each mouthful. The Lychee Pork follows naturally, juicy pieces with a delicate crunch, glazed in a sweet and tangy sauce that stays balanced and never cloying. For sharing, the Fried Heng Hwa Bee Hoon is fragrant and lightly wok-kissed, its handmade texture distinct from the usual mall fare. Dependable, consistent, and rooted in heritage, it brings polished Fujian flavours right into the neighbourhood.

6. Genki Sushi
The soft whirr of the sushi train and the chorus of tablet notifications feel like a tiny symphony every time I step into Genki Sushi at SingPost Centre. Just a few minutes from Paya Lebar MRT, it is always buzzing with office workers tapping briskly on screens and families sliding into booths after grocery runs. Plates glide past in steady rhythm, and the open kitchen sends out a gentle haze of steam and toasted rice aroma that settles you in almost instantly. It is efficient, lively, and comfortably familiar.
My star pick is the Sukiyaki Beef Sushi, lightly torched beef shortplate glazed in a sweet and savoury sauce, so tender it nearly collapses onto the warm rice. The caramelised edges release a smoky fragrance that makes the short wait for delivery feel theatrical. The Hotate Mentai Sushi follows closely behind, a thick scallop aburi-seared and crowned with creamy mentaiko that tastes smoky and briny at once. I usually add Ebi Mentai Sushi too, juicy shrimp topped with that familiar spicy mayo glow. Growing up in the East, mall meals like this felt special yet effortless, and this spot still delivers that same easy, reliable pleasure.

7. Go-Ang Pratunam Chicken Rice
Eating alone at NEX, tray in front of me and the office crowd buzzing around, I realised this Thai chicken rice stall is not your average mall fix. At Go-Ang Pratunam Chicken Rice, the Single Portion Chicken Thigh is the first thing to order. The meat is tender, almost silky, with a thin layer of skin glistening under the lights. The rice is fragrant with chicken broth and garlic, each grain glossy but never oily. The sweet and spicy green chilli sauce delivers a proper Bangkok kick, sharp, punchy and bright enough to wake up tired taste buds.
After a long day on the road, the Duck & Mushroom Soup feels deeply comforting. It is double boiled and hearty, filled with proper chunks of duck rather than just bones, the broth rich with savoury depth. I often add the Stir-Fried Tofu with Dark Soya Sauce, firm with a light crisp edge and free from the greasiness that plagues lesser versions. Lunchtime queues stay steady, with Serangoon families and office workers waiting patiently, a quiet sign of consistency and trust. For Bangkok style chicken rice without leaving the North East, this stop earns its following.

8. Xiang Xiang Hunan Cuisine 湘香湖南菜
The dinner crowd at NEX moves like clockwork, parents corralling kids and office workers loosening ties, and right in the middle of that bustle sits Xiang Xiang Hunan Cuisine. The aroma of garlic and chilli reaches you before the menu does. I went straight for the Hunan Style Stir Fried Pork. Iberico slices arrive tender with a slight bite, wok-fried till smoky and tossed with green chilli that delivers steady heat without numbing the tongue. It is bold and direct, the sort of flavour that keeps you reaching for another spoonful of rice.
The Golden Broth Sour & Spicy Fish feels lighter but still punchy, its tangy broth cutting through the oil so you do not feel jelak even after a few bowls of fragrant Wu Chang rice. The Crispy Tofu Stuffed with Soy Milk rounds things out, crisp on the outside and silky within, gentle enough for children and spice-shy aunties. In a mall full of chains, this is where Serangoon regulars come for proper wok hei and confident flavour.

9. Aburi-EN
Mall lunch at NEX can be chaotic, but the steady queue outside Aburi-EN tells you the rice bowls are worth the wait. The star is the Premium Buta Don, layered with thick slices of aburi grilled pork belly, edges lightly charred and fat rendered until glossy but never greasy. That smoky finish over pearly Japanese rice delivers deep savoury flavour with every spoonful. Around you, students from Serangoon Secondary School and nearby office workers tuck in quietly, broken only by the clink of spoons and the occasional soft sigh of satisfaction.
For a richer bite, the Iberico Hoho Don offers extra marbling and tenderness, indulgent yet still friendly on the wallet. When the mood calls for something warming, the Kyushu Tonkotsu Karamiso Ramen brings a creamy pork broth lifted by a steady miso heat that lingers comfortably. In a mall filled with quick meals, this spot feels dependable, consistent, and surprisingly comforting.

10. SEORAE JIB
The dinner crowd at NEX moves like clockwork. At 6pm sharp, families with shopping bags queue outside SEORAE JIB, and the scent of charcoal drifts through the corridor before the grills even come into view. After years spent tracking down dependable eats and noting them carefully in my kopi notebook, I have learnt to recognise places with staying power. This is one of them.
The Galmaegisal (Pork Skirt) is the clear star, lean and juicy, lightly hay-smoked until the edges caramelise. Each bite carries a sweet-savoury smokiness without excess grease, satisfying without turning jelak. The Samgyeopsal (Pork Belly) follows closely, made from Spain chestnut-fed pork with crisped edges and buttery layers, perfect wrapped with unlimited kimchi and sesame potatoes. For families, the Signature Pork & Beef Set brings Black Angus beef alongside assorted pork cuts, offering variety without fuss. Ventilation is strong, meat quality remains consistent, and the steady queues speak for themselves. In a busy Serangoon mall, this barbecue stop feels reassuringly serious about its craft.

11. Penang Culture
The lunch crowd at Compass One moves to a steady rhythm, trays clacking, children bargaining over ice lemon tea, aunties calling out orders. Right in the middle sits Penang Culture, drawing a queue that often stretches deep into the corridor. I have passed through this mall countless times after work in Sengkang, and the dinner line here easily rivals the kopitiams I note in my little kopi notebook. The steady crowd says a lot about consistency.
Order the Penang Char Kway Teow first. The wok hei arrives immediately, smoky and lightly charred, coating glossy flat noodles tangled with egg, prawns and cockles. It carries a bold savoury depth that feels true to Penang roots. The Penang Assam Laksa follows closely, its tamarind broth tangy and layered, lifted by aromatic ginger flower and thick noodles with real bite. Sour and spicy are held in careful balance. Even the Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodles, gentler in profile, reveal a prawn stock simmered long enough to draw out sweetness and body. For halal-certified Penang comfort nearby, it is easy to see why regulars return.

12. Beauty In The Pot 美滋锅
In Beauty In The Pot at Orchard, when the shopping bags grow heavier and the air-conditioning turns too cold, this is the sort of place you slip into and linger. After years of driving across Singapore for work, I can say not every mall hotpot justifies the queue, but this one consistently does. The room hums with conversation, steam rising from copper pots, staff moving briskly yet calmly through the dinner crowd.
The Beauty Collagen Broth is the star. Creamy and silky, simmered until it lightly coats the lips, it feels rich without becoming overwhelming. The staff top up the soup without prompting, a small detail that speaks of attentive service. Swish US Wagyu Beef slices in for only a few seconds. The marbling melts into the broth, buttery yet still distinctly beefy. Do not overlook the Ebiko Prawn Paste. Once cooked, it delivers a bouncy bite with delicate pops of roe. Office workers, families, aunties marking birthdays all gather here for something dependable and deeply comforting.

13. Pepper Lunch
At Pepper Lunch in NEX, the hot plate arrives with a sharp sizzle that cuts through the usual mall chatter. I have had plenty of kopi gao before rushing to work, but this feels different because you finish cooking your own lunch. The Beef Pepper Rice is the clear favourite. Thin slices of beef sear gently on the 200°C plate, folding into garlicky rice, sweet corn, and the signature pepper sauce. The aroma rises in smoky, buttery waves, with a peppery kick that lingers on the palate. Students, office workers, and families queue steadily during peak hour, drawn by that dependable fragrance and theatre.
If you prefer something gentler, the Chicken Pepper Rice offers juicy chunks that caramelise nicely when given time to char. The Salmon Pepper Rice provides a lighter option, the flakes staying moist as they absorb the honey garlic glaze. Portions are consistent and satisfying. In a busy Serangoon mall, this spot turns a quick meal into an engaging, hands-on lunch.

14. Eat 3 Bowls 呷三碗
The moment you step into NEX’s B2 food zone, the smell of slow simmered broth cuts through the usual mall air conditioned chill and bubble tea sweetness. At Eat 3 Bowls, the queue is steady, families juggling shopping bags and office workers loosening their ties, all waiting for the limited Braised Beef Noodles. Only about 30 bowls are served each day, so timing matters. The beef shank is tender to the point of surrender, steeped in a broth layered with star anise and peppercorn warmth. It has the depth of a well brewed kopi gao, the sort that keeps you company through long evenings.
If you are after something heartier, the Pork Chop Egg Fried Rice delivers. A thick, juicy chop rests over properly executed wok hei rice, each grain distinct and lightly smoky, never pale or soggy. The Oyster & Pig Intestines Mee Sua is smooth and soothing, with fresh oysters free of any off smell and intestines cleaned thoroughly for a clean bite. In a mall packed with options, this Taiwanese kitchen stands out for its consistency and honest, comforting flavours, even when the weekend crowd swells in Serangoon.

15. Riverside Canton Claypot Cuisine 江边广东砂锅菜
I remember the first time I caught the aroma wafting from Riverside Canton Claypot Cuisine. It hit me like a warm hug after a long day on the road. Nestled at NEX B1-34/35, this spot turns simple claypot dishes into something worth lingering over. The Claypot Grilled Qing Jiang Fish in Green Pepper Sauce steals the show, with crispy skin giving way to tender, flaky meat coated in a spicy, numbing sauce that had nearby office workers nodding in quiet approval. The Claypot Beef Brisket with Potato and Radish follows, its soft chunks melting into a subtly sweet, hearty broth that is perfect for a midweek pick-me-up. Even the Tomato Salt Baked Chicken deserves a mention, with juicy, tangy bites infused with herbal notes that quietly impress health-conscious diners strolling past NEX after work.
What I love most is the familiarity, with generations of Serangoon families and mall regulars keeping the claypots steaming from lunch to dinner. Portions are generous, flavours consistent, and the buzz of satisfied chatter makes it feel less like a mall food court and more like a shared table at home. Riverside proves that even in a busy hub like NEX, Cantonese claypot comfort can hold its own, making Serangoon worth a food detour any day.

16. Tamago-En
A friend once texted me, “Bryan, why queue so long just for eggs?” Then he took one bite and went quiet. That is my usual scene at Tamago-En in NEX, right in the thick of the Serangoon lunch crowd. Families and office workers balance trays like a game of Tetris, while the scent of sweet soy and warm egg drifts from the kitchen.
The Oyako Don is always my first recommendation. Okinawa eggs are gently cooked until silky and almost custard-like, draping over tender chicken and soaking into the rice below. The flavour leans sweet and savoury, deeply comforting, with a texture that feels carefully judged rather than rushed. The Beef Steak Sando is just as satisfying, thick shokupan cradling juicy beef and a sunny-side-up egg whose golden yolk seeps lightly into the bread. For sharing, the Omelette Skewer (5-Kind) offers sweet tamagoyaki with varied toppings, neatly sliced and easy to pass around. In a mall filled with quick meals, this place feels dependable, with good portions, steady quality, and a queue that moves with purpose.

17. Dian Xiao Er 店小二
“Order the duck first, don’t think too much,” I always tell my family when we step into Dian Xiao Er – NEX. Weekend evenings carry that familiar Serangoon buzz, aunties discussing tuition schedules, children weaving between tables, and a steady queue forming outside the rustic inn-style space. The star is the Herbal Roast Duck. The skin crackles lightly under the knife, the meat stays tender, and the fragrance of dang gui rises with each slice. The first bite brings a gentle bittersweet herbal note that cuts through the richness without any gaminess. It feels bold yet measured, a balance that keeps you reaching for the next piece.
The Fish Maw Thick Soup with Seafood arrives bubbling in a generous pot, silky and comforting, like a banquet dish without the formality. Then there is the Silver Cod Fish in Supreme Soy Sauce, soft and fatty, glazed in a savoury sweet sheen that clings to every flake. In a mall filled with quick meals, this is where families settle in for a proper, unhurried feast.

18. Shabu-GO
At NEX, Shabu-GO offers a comforting pause from the mall crowds. Start with the Signature Pork Shabu Set if you want something warming yet light. Individual pots bubble gently at each seat, the clear kombu broth releasing a soft sea-sweet aroma as thin pork slices cook in seconds. The meat is tender with a slight bite, balanced between lean and delicate marbling. It feels simple and steady, the sort of everyday meal that regulars return to after work or school.
The Beef Shabu Set brings a richer note, with slices that turn silky pink when swished briefly through the rolling soup. For something lighter, the Seafood Shabu Set adds prawns and fish that lend natural sweetness to the broth as it simmers. Portions are fair for mall pricing, vegetables arrive fresh with a pleasant crunch, and even during peak dinner hours the soup remains consistent in flavour. Dependable, efficient, and family friendly, it is a reliable hotpot stop in Serangoon.

19. Hatsumi Donburi & Soba
Like a quiet crescendo in the middle of Serangoon, Hatsumi Donburi and Soba at NEX builds flavour bowl by bowl without fuss. I dropped by after a long morning delivery run, notebook in hand, and the lunchtime crowd was already gathering. Office staff from Serangoon Central queued alongside young families and students comparing bowls. There is a steady confidence here. Orders move briskly, trays land neatly, and the kitchen keeps a reassuring rhythm that speaks of consistency.
The Miso Salmon Don is the star. The salmon skin crackles under the fork, the flesh flaky and glazed with savoury sweet miso that perfumes the tray, deeply satisfying with fluffy Japanese rice. The Chicken Katsu Don holds its own, with a golden panko crust, juicy centre, and softly set egg that seeps into the grains without turning them soggy. For something a little more refined yet still wallet friendly, the Truffle Shoyu Chicken Don offers a gentle aromatic lift, subtle truffle woven through a glossy glaze. A dependable halal Japanese fix that rises well above typical mall fare.

20. TAI ER 太二酸菜鱼
When the December rain hits Serangoon and everyone shelters inside NEX, this is where I go to warm up properly. The star is the Suan Cai Yu. A generous bowl of sour and spicy fish arrives at a rolling simmer, steam carrying the sharp aroma of pickled mustard greens straight to your face. The first sip reveals layers of flavour, tangy and gently numbing from Sichuan peppercorn, yet clean and never greasy. Thin slices of fish are poached until silky and tender, soaking up that bright, punchy broth. Families share a pot with extra rice, aunties nod in approval, and the consistency from visit to visit keeps the crowd coming back.
While waiting, order the Crispy Pork Bites. They are crisp on the outside, juicy within, lightly dusted with chilli and excellent alongside the soup. The Poached Sliced Beef is a quieter standout, tender and velvety, cloaked in fragrant chilli oil that brings steady heat without overwhelming the palate. In a mall filled with predictable options, this spot delivers confident spice and depth, especially welcome on a rainy day.

21. Texas Chicken
Some days, after a long logistics run, I just want comfort food that feels like a reward. That is when I head to Texas Chicken at NEX and join the steady dinner crowd. Families clutch shopping bags, office workers loosen their ties, and everyone queues with the same craving in mind: that familiar crunch done right.
The Herb & Garlic Chicken Combo is my usual order. The first bite releases a fragrant, slightly sweet herbal aroma, followed by the crackle of crisp skin and a rush of juicy meat. It is well seasoned without feeling greasy, balanced and consistent every time. The Tom Yum Oat Fried Chicken delivers tangy heat with an oat crust that adds extra texture, lively but not overpowering. For something richer, the Salted Egg Fried Chicken coats the meat in a creamy, savoury glaze that carries flavour without excess saltiness. In a mall filled with options, this counter holds its own with dependable standards and proper crunch.

22. Ichiban Boshi
The sight of thick orange salmon slices fanned neatly over rice always stops me mid-step at NEX. At Ichiban Boshi, the Salmon Sashimi Don is the star, cool, buttery salmon laid generously over tangy Japanese rice, with ikura popping in tiny bursts of briny sweetness. I have queued here during the dinner rush after my logistics rounds, and the line moves steadily. Even when the mall crowd is hungry and restless, the quality holds. The rice is consistently well seasoned, each grain distinct yet lightly sticky, the balance carefully judged so the fish remains the focus.
If you prefer something warm, the Unagi Seiromushi arrives in a wooden box, steam escaping as you lift the lid. Sweet, smoky eel rests over fluffy rice, meant to be savoured slowly. The Tori Ankake Yakimeshi feels more homely, crispy chicken cutlet over fried rice covered with silky egg gravy. In a Serangoon mall packed with quick bites, this kitchen delivers comforting Japanese fare with reliable consistency, and that alone makes the queue worthwhile.

23. Sushi Express
After-school students in uniform crowd the entrance, trays clattering while salmon plates glide past on the belt like a tiny sushi train. I have stopped here more times than I can count after a long logistics run. Parking is straightforward, the queue looks dramatic but moves quickly, and the turnover keeps everything fresh.
Go straight for the Salmon Sashimi or Salmon Sushi (Black Plate). The slices are thick and glossy with clean sweetness, laid over lightly seasoned rice that supports rather than overwhelms. You can see the chefs topping up the belt, bright orange fish with no dull edges, a reassuring sign of steady standards. For more punch, the Ikura Gunkan delivers a briny pop that fills the mouth without stretching the wallet. When available, the Cooked Oyster Sushi is plump and surprisingly delicate, never fishy, just gently savoury. In a mall full of fast food, this is a dependable fix for simple, satisfying sushi.

24. SUSHI TEI
Family dinner at NEX often ends with someone suggesting sushi, and we somehow circle back to Sushi Tei. Tucked among the mall buzz and bubble tea queues, the restaurant hums with the clatter of plates and children eyeing the conveyor belt like a toy train set. It is lively but never chaotic, the kind of place that handles crowds with practised ease.
The Fried Garlic Rice is the first thing I tell everyone to order. Fluffy grains are tossed with crisp garlic bits that release a savoury, almost nutty aroma the moment the bowl lands on the table. It is simple, balanced in salt and fragrance, and not greasy, with a portion generous enough for sharing. The Sashimi Moriawase follows naturally, thick slices of salmon and shima-aji, glossy and cool, carrying that clean sweetness that comes from careful handling. For something richer, the Aburi Ibérico Pork Cheek arrives lightly torched, edges caramelised, tender within, finished with a gentle ichimi heat. After years of noting dependable kopi stalls for my dad, I value consistency. Sushi Tei delivers steady quality, which explains why Serangoon families return time and again.

The queue at Oriental Kopi moves like weekend traffic along Serangoon Central, steady and patient, filled with people who already know what they are here for. Tucked inside NEX, this Malaysian kopitiam draws families, students, and office workers with the quiet confidence of a seasoned neighbourhood favourite. Orders are called out briskly, trays glide across tables, and the aroma of toasted bread and rich kopi hangs comfortably in the air. Even during peak periods, the kitchen keeps a steady rhythm, and that consistency is part of the appeal.
The Oriental Signature Nasi Lemak leads the charge, with fragrant pandan and coconut rice, a crispy golden drumstick, crunchy ikan bilis, and sambal that delivers a bright, punchy heat. The rice stays fluffy rather than clumpy, and the chicken remains juicy despite the rush. Midway through, a bite of the Oriental Egg Tarts reveals thick, creamy custard nestled in flaky pastry, glossy and gently sweet. To finish, the Double Butter Kaya Toast (Pandan) arrives with cold slabs of butter melting into crisp toast, simple and deeply satisfying. It feels like a proper Malaysian makan trip without crossing the Causeway, which explains why Serangoon regulars keep returning.

26. Gong Yuan Ma La Tang 宫源麻辣烫
In the thick of Serangoon’s mall bustle, with MRT crowds streaming through NEX and families circling for dinner, Gong Yuan Ma La Tang keeps a steady rhythm. The Mala Tang Soup Base is the anchor. Aromatic steam curls up the moment it arrives, carrying that unmistakable Sichuan peppercorn fragrance. The numbness builds slowly and pleasantly, never harsh, never slick with excess oil. You taste depth before heat, and the balance holds from first sip to last.
I linger at the ingredient chiller as if revising for an exam, piecing together my bowl. Beef Slices with Noodles is my default, tender beef draped over springy noodles that stay perfectly cooked even during the peak hour rush. On days I lean lighter, the Vegetable and Seafood Mix delivers crisp greens and sweet prawns that drink in the broth’s layered flavour. After many late-night tastings across Singapore, this is a bowl I trust for consistency, even when the dinner crowd presses in.

27. Idaten Udon
At Idaten Udon in NEX, the broth flows as steadily as the MRT pulling into Serangoon, smooth, dependable, and busy at peak hour. Tucked inside the mall, this udon spot draws families balancing shopping bags and office workers chasing a quick lunch. The queue looks long but moves efficiently. Grab a tray, pick your tempura, choose your bowl, and settle in. The rhythm feels practised, and the consistency keeps regulars returning.
The Pirikara Tonyu Udon stands out, with a creamy soy milk broth carrying a gentle chilli heat that slowly builds without overwhelming the palate. The udon strands are thick, bouncy, and satisfyingly chewy. For something richer, the Mentai Carbonara Udon offers a lush mentaiko sauce that is savoury with a faint sweetness, coating each strand generously. If you prefer restraint, the Kitsune Udon delivers clean comfort in a clear broth with soft tofu, especially good with a crisp prawn tempura on the side. Honest flavours, steady execution, and no fuss.

28. Canton Paradise 樂天小香港
In NEX, Canton Paradise gives Serangoon folk a proper Cantonese fix without heading into town. After my delivery rounds in Sengkang, I often swing by and see families already queueing outside, a steady sign of consistency. The Roast Meats Platter (Char Siew, Roast Pork, Duck) is the centrepiece. You can watch the carving in the open kitchen. Duck skin crackles under the knife, char siew shows a sticky caramelised edge with a gentle smoky sweetness, and the roast pork shatters cleanly before the warm fat layer turns silky on the tongue.
For dim sum, the Crispy Skin Char Siew Bun arrives with a fluffy top and lightly crackled crust, giving way to a sweet and savoury filling that flows but never floods. A plate of Rice Rolls with Fillings balances the table, silky cheung fun draped over tender ingredients, soft yet pleasantly bouncy. I have spent years jotting kopi stalls in my notebook, but this spot proves Serangoon’s food scene extends well beyond the kopitiam, with polished Cantonese cooking that draws a loyal crowd.

29. Paris Baguette 巴黎贝甜
The first bite of the Sliced Double Choc Fudge Cake nearly made me forget I was in the middle of bustling NEX. Thick, moist layers are stacked with fudgy frosting that feels rich without tipping into jelak. Families and office crowds share neat slices over coffee, and every piece looks consistent, with no skimping on height or cream. The crumb is properly baked, soft and tight with a buttery finish, not airy or dry. It is the sort of cake that holds its structure yet melts readily on the tongue.
For something savoury, the Sausage Cheese Bread is my preferred road trip snack. The bread is fluffy with a slight sweetness, topped with fragrant cheese and scattered sausage bits, simple but well executed. The Strawberry Yogurt Cheesecake offers a lighter option, bringing tangy yoghurt sharpness against creamy richness. In a Serangoon mall packed with rice bowls and hotplates, Paris Baguette feels like a small French pause amid the rush of Serangoon.

30. Yakiniku-GO
The steady sizzle of meat hitting the grill is the first thing you notice at Yakiniku-GO, that sharp “shhh” sound cutting through the dinner crowd at NEX like music to a tired logistics uncle’s ears. After a long day on the road, I park myself here with the Yakiniku-GO Set. The beef short plate and ribeye cook quickly on the personal grill, edges caramelising while the centre stays tender and juicy. Dip into the sweet-savoury tare sauce, take a bite with rice, and it melts away without leaving a heavy smoke smell on your shirt. Even during the six to eight in the evening rush, the queue moves steadily and the ventilation keeps the air clear.
If you are extra hungry, go for the Double Karubi Set with its richer marbling and fuller flavour. I have flipped enough slices to know the sweet spot: slight char, juices bubbling at the surface. The Value Treat Set suits mixed cravings, and the pork belly turns beautifully crisp with a bit of patience. Free tea refills, consistent portions, and that familiar MRT crowd buzz make this a dependable stop for folks in Serangoon who want a fuss-free yakiniku fix.

31. Ramen Kiou
At NEX’s &JOY food street, the queues at Ramen Kiou move steadily, families with prams, students in uniform, office workers squeezing in a quick lunch, all drawn by that creamy Osaka-style tonkotsu. The Torotama Kiou Ramen leads the pack. Its broth is thick and fully emulsified from pressure-cooked pork bones, carrying a gentle lift of ginger that keeps the richness in check. The Kyushu-style noodles are springy with a clean bite, and the chashu comes thick-cut and tender, with no unpleasant porkiness, just well-handled meat and careful simmering.
If you prefer deeper savouriness, the Shoyu Tonkotsu Ramen layers soy sauce into the base, adding a rounded umami note that blooms when you break the molten egg into the soup. The Wafu Tonkotsu Ramen takes a lighter path, with subtle kelp nuances and silky slices of wagyu that lend quiet luxury without losing comfort. In Serangoon, this is a bowl you can rely on for consistency and honest flavour.

32. Swensen’s
The aunties in my block swear by this place whenever there is a birthday at NEX. After years of driving past Serangoon Central for work, I have noticed the same pattern. When the mall crowd thickens and children start tugging at their parents, families drift here for something dependable and filling.
The Japanese Katsu Curry Baked Rice is the standout. Golden, crisp katsu is sliced over rice, then baked beneath a blanket of melted cheese while rich, gently sweet Japanese curry pools underneath. The crust stays surprisingly crunchy, even after baking, and the curry has a rounded depth that surpasses many kopitiam versions. The Crispy Cornflake Chicken arrives in generous slabs, its coating shattering audibly before giving way to juicy meat, a reliable lunch favourite with the office crowd. And almost every table orders the Sticky Chewy Chocolate, thick hot fudge cascading over ice cream, a comforting finale after a long weekend queue. Steady portions and familiar flavours keep families returning.

33. The Hainan Story 海南寶
I will be honest, I went to NEX just to walk around, but somehow my legs always drift back to The Hainan Story. Right in the thick of the Serangoon lunch crowd, with office workers hovering and families queuing after grocery runs, the smell of curry and fried cutlet greets you before you even see the counter. The Hae Bee Hiam Spaghetti with Fried Pork Cutlet is what made me pause mid-bite. Spicy shrimp paste clings to properly al dente pasta, savoury and punchy without overwhelming. The potato chip crumb crust shatters with a clean crunch, showing careful frying technique, and the onsen egg slips in gently to round out the heat. Comforting, but skilfully done.
If you want something heartier, the Hainanese Pig’s Trotter Assam Curry Noodle brings slow-braised depth, the meat tender and gelatinous from hours of patient simmering. The assam gravy is tangy and bright, never overly jelak. I usually add a plate of Newspaper Curry Rice to share, a lighter style curry fragrant with blue ginger, perfect for soaking into fluffy rice while conversation flows. For a mall restaurant, it carries Hainanese heritage with quiet confidence.

34. Fong Sheng Hao 豐盛號
At NEX basement, where the lunchtime crowd moves like MRT peak hour, the smoky aroma from Fong Sheng Hao pulls me in before I even spot the signboard. I have been driving past Serangoon for years, but this is one place I gladly detour for. It earns a page in my kopi notebook, even if this visit leans more towards milk toast than kopi gao.
The Milky Butter Toast ($6.50) is the star. Charcoal-grilled until the crust crackles lightly, the inside stays airy and soft. Tear it open and the milky butter crumble melts into the bread, fragrant and smoky without feeling jelak. The grill work is steady and consistent, with no soggy centre even during the peak-hour queue. When I am hungrier, the Braised Pork Rice ($8.60) satisfies with tender pork belly and a proper meat-to-fat balance, the savoury sauce soaking into fluffy rice. The Pork Egg and Cheese ($8.60) is a dependable handheld option, juicy cutlet and molten cheese pressed between smoky toast. In a mall filled with chains, this little corner of Taiwan in Serangoon feels reassuringly reliable and worth the queue.

35. Hot Tomato Cafe & Grill
A good steak in the heartland feels like a hug after a long day on the road, steady, comforting, and without fuss. That is the appeal of Hot Tomato Cafe & Grill at NEX, where families queue after grocery runs and students fill the tables before catching the MRT. The Sirloin Steak Set is the star. It arrives thick cut and nicely charred, the smoky crust giving way to a juicy centre when ordered medium. For the price, it delivers honest flavour and proper beefiness, with consistent doneness that regulars appreciate.
When I am especially hungry, I go for the Mixed Grill Set. The chicken chop is tender, the sausage well browned, everything seasoned simply but done right. The Aglio Olio with Grilled Chicken is lighter, fragrant with garlic and offering a pleasant chewy bite, though intentionally slick with olive oil for indulgence. Having grown up around Serangoon, I have seen many Western stalls come and go. This one stays busy for a reason. It is a dependable, wallet friendly fix worth revisiting.

36. COLLIN’S
After years of kopi runs around Serangoon, I never expected a mall grill joint like COLLIN’S at NEX to win me over so consistently. Right above the MRT bustle, families gather outside at dinner, aunties comparing menus while children watch the sizzling plates pass by. The Wagyu Beef Cube is the star. Each piece arrives with caramelised edges and a tender centre, the buttery richness soaking into a toasted bun layered with double cheddar and a swipe of honey mustard. The first bite carries a steady smoky aroma, balanced and never overcooked or cloying.
If you prefer something classic, the Grilled Chicken Chop rarely disappoints. The centre stays juicy, framed by crisp char lines and a portion generous enough to fuel a long day. It is the sort of hearty plate I would gladly recommend to someone finishing a late shift. The Truffle Mushroom Pasta leans more subtle, creamy yet restrained, with an earthy aroma that lingers without overwhelming. In a neighbourhood filled with quick bites, this spot shows that Serangoon’s food scene handles dependable Western comfort with confidence and consistency.

37. Baskin-Robbins
Right outside the cinema level at NEX, families gather with pastel cups in hand, children debating flavours as if it were a serious life choice. Baskin-Robbins has long been a dependable sweet stop after a hot bowl of soup downstairs or a full day of errands. My go-to is the Very Berry Strawberry Ice Cream, creamy and dotted with real berry bits, with just enough tartness to cut through heavier meals. The scoop holds its shape even when the mall crowd is thick, a small but telling sign of steady temperature control and consistent handling.
If you are in the mood for something tropical, try the It Takes Two to Mango Ice Cream, smooth and vibrant, especially refreshing when blended into a shake. For a more playful option, the Mix N’ Shake Mango Blues arrives in bright swirls that children love photographing. After years of noting reliable kopi stalls for my dad, I have learnt this: sometimes the best break from kopi gao is a cold, steady scoop. In Serangoon, dessert cravings settle comfortably here.

38. Lao Huo Tang 老火汤
At Lao Huo Tang in NEX, the first spoonful is pure silk, hot, savoury, and the kind of comfort that settles warmly in your stomach. Right in the thick of Serangoon’s mall bustle, you will spot office workers balancing trays and aunties queuing patiently for their evening fix. The Salted Vegetable Duck Soup stands out, with tender duck pieces steeped in a slow-brewed broth that is savoury, gently tangy, and deep from hours of careful simmering. You can taste the old-school Cantonese technique. The broth has body and structure, never thin or watered down.
The Pig Stomach Soup arrives peppery and hearty, with chewy slices and soft peanuts that add texture and bite, especially comforting after a full day in air-conditioning. For something lighter, the Ginseng Herbal Chicken Soup carries an earthy herbal aroma that lingers without overwhelming the palate. Growing up around Sengkang, my father used to say good soup must be steady. Even during the dinner rush, this stall keeps its flavours consistent. It is dependable, nourishing, and quietly satisfying in a way that keeps regulars returning.

39. Toast Box 吐司工坊
By 9am, the queue at Toast Box NEX in Serangoon is already curling past the entrance, filled with office aunties, sleepy students, and uncles like me waiting for that first kopi hit. I grew up in Sengkang on mornings of kaya toast before school, so the Traditional Kaya Toast Set feels personal. The bread arrives crisp at the edges and lightly charred, spread with glossy pandan kaya and thick slabs of butter that melt into a sweet and salty balance. Dip it into the soft-boiled eggs seasoned with dark soy sauce and white pepper. The richness, warmth, and aroma settle in gently, steady and familiar.
If I am hungrier, the Laksa delivers with a lemak, coconut-rich broth, plump prawns, and gravy that clings well to the noodles. It is surprisingly satisfying for a mall spot, especially once the lunch crowd gathers. I often add the Peanut Thick Toast, fluffy and generously slathered, ideal for sharing while a cup of kopi gao fuels my notebook updates. In a basement packed with choices, this remains a reliable, comforting anchor that Serangoon returns to again and again.

40. Jack’s Place
Right in the middle of the dinner crowd at NEX, families hover outside Jack’s Place, waiting patiently as the smell of grilled meat drifts into the corridor. The queue moves steadily, a quiet sign of loyalty built over years. I stopped by after a long day on the road, notebook in my bag as usual, drawn in by that familiar charred aroma.
The Ribeye Steak with Baked Potato remains the anchor. It arrives juicy and well seared, finished with red wine sauce that adds depth without overwhelming the beef’s natural flavour. The baked potato is properly fluffy, loaded with sour cream and bacon, comforting and hearty. The Chicken Chop comes golden and crisp, with gravy that seeps into the tender meat without turning it soggy. Even the Stuffed Mushrooms impress, baked until the cheese bubbles over a savoury seafood filling, earthy and creamy in balance. In a mall full of quick bites, this is where you sit down and take your time.

41. Jollibee
At Jollibee in NEX, the queue moves like clockwork, yet no one seems impatient. Families clutch shopping bags, students linger in uniform, and office workers slip in for a quick bite before heading back upstairs. After a long day on the road, I always tell myself to order just one thing. That resolution never lasts.
Go straight for the Chickenjoy. The shatter-crisp skin cracks at first bite, giving way to juicy, well-seasoned meat with real savoury depth. Dip it into the glossy gravy and it only gets better. The Jolly Spaghetti brings playful sweetness, tangled with cheese and dotted with hotdog slices that taste like old-school birthday parties. It sounds unusual, but the balance works. If you are properly hungry, the Nasi Lemak Chickenjoy deserves attention, pairing fragrant coconut rice and punchy sambal with that famous crunch. In Serangoon’s heartland buzz, this outlet proves fast food can still carry flavour, memory, and character.

42. Graffiti Café
You would not expect a proper Pontian bowl in a busy mall basement, but Graffiti Café proves otherwise. Tucked in Basement 2 of NEX near Serangoon MRT, the queue winds past commuters and families on their way home. I often stop here after long delivery runs, and the aroma of pork lard and chilli reaches me before I even see the stall. Regulars know the rhythm. Orders are called briskly and bowls assembled with practised hands, yet the quality remains steady even during the dinner rush.
The Pontian Wanton Noodles (Dry) is the star. Springy noodles without a harsh alkaline note are tossed in savoury black sauce, layered with lean char siew and crisp nuggets of lard for richness and bite. The tomato-laced chilli brings gentle heat and a rounded tang that lifts the whole bowl. Pair it with the Fried Wantons, golden parcels that crackle with each bite, and finish with a bowl of Green Bean Soup, served hot with balanced sweetness and a comforting, earthy flavour. At $5.50 to $7, the portions are generous and the cooking reliable. Serangoon residents are fortunate to have this dependable bowl downstairs.

Every time I step into NEX after a long delivery run, I see the same scene: students in uniform crowding tables, families weighing up the menu, and a steady queue outside Saizeriya near the entrance. It has become a Serangoon ritual, cheap and cheerful, with enough variety to settle any debate. The place hums with chatter and clinking cutlery, yet the service moves briskly and plates arrive without fuss.
The Doria (Baked Rice) is my regular order. It comes bubbling hot with a nicely browned top, creamy sauce soaking into the rice and carrying a gentle savoury flavour. The portion has stayed consistent over countless visits, which matters when you are properly hungry after work. The Escargots arrive sizzling in garlicky butter, tender and rich, ideal for sharing. The Pepper Chicken is hearty and satisfying, with juicy meat coated in a peppery sweet glaze that brings familiar Western hawker flavours into cool, air conditioned comfort.
