Being a small restaurant store along Geylang road, Hao Zhang Ji Seafood BBQ is helmed by a Chinese owner with a very traditional style of cooking. With their style of cooking, you’ll find that they tend to have their food on the saltier side with the food having a heavier and more concentrated taste.

They have a range of assorted skewers for which we ordered a few to try. The skewers are nicely barbequed with a heavy dash of cumin powder and more strongly peppered as well. The meat skewers were tender and light, with the lamb skewer tasting a slight bit gamey, just right for the mainland Chinese palate. The beef and pork skewers were great to taste but the pork was a tad more chewy as compared to the beef skewers.

We paired the skewers together with some carbs for our meal, and ordered their special Ban Mee noodles. The noodles were thick and chewy and as a fan of noodles that are thicker, we enjoyed the texture of the noodles. The noodles were also seasoned lightly and tasted fresh when eaten with the shredded cucumbers. However, the meat that went with the dish was a little tough and did not fit well with the noodles.

We also got their lamb fried rice to try as it was something less seldom seen. The lamb meat was cut into small pieces and stir fried within the rice, giving the rice a strong fragrance. The lamb did have a slight gamey taste but the gamey taste wasn’t mixed within the rice grains, just the fragrance of the lamb.

Overall, the place was a cozy setting with most of the customers visiting being mainland Chinese. Having been there once, we realise the food seems to be made catered for the mainland Chinese people and if you’re a fan of the heavier tasting cuisine, you’ll find yourself right at home with this place. For people who stay in the area, this is a decent place to drop by, but you won’t be blown away with the dishes here for sure.
