Eee Mo BBQ – Hidden Gem away from Korean Food Street at Tanjong Pagar

Located at Tanjong Pagar, you’d think this restaurant would be one of the well known Korean restaurants at the heart of the Korean food street. Instead, it is tucked at a little corner of Tanjong Pagar, well away from the bustling Korean food street filled with all the popular restaurants and long queues.

Whilst being hidden from the rest of the Korean restaurants, that doesn’t mean the quality is any different, in fact, this place has some dishes that are even better quality than some of the other restaurants out there.

Assorted Banchan
The quality of banchan offered often tells you about the quality of the restaurant before you even step within. And with the banchan offered here, you won’t be disappointed. Whilst it lacks in variety, the kimchi maintained a fine balance of spiciness and sourness, keeping your taste just in check such that it may pair well with the other dishes. The japchae, fried squid legs and omelette were also welcome side dishes to go well with the meal as they got us started before the main dishes arrived.

Yangnyeon Chicken
Yangnyeom Chicken is a kind of Korean fried chicken marinated in a gochujang sauce called yangnyeom. Yangnyeom chicken tastes lightly sweet and spicy and is often taken with beer in Korea. In Singapore, there are places which sell yangnyeom chicken but not many places are able to recreate the taste and texture of those that can be found in Korea. At Eee Mo BBQ, you’ll be surprised to find that they were able to recreate not just the taste but also the texture and get to relish the deliciously fried chicken nicely marinated in yangnyeom sauce. It was a great side dish as we had this together with our mains.

Mul Naengmyeon with Sliced Beef
We also ordered mul naengmyeon with sliced beef for carbs! Having had naengmyeon in Singapore before, I could say that Singapore tend to have tasteless noodles in light broth that tend to be diluted and as they usually add ice within, it gets even more tasteless as the ice melts and you end up with a bland broth and bland noodles. However, the naengmyeon here is a different story, with beef broth as a base, the soup blended really well with the cold noodles and garnishes to form a flavourful burst of taste. The beef slices on the other hand, were a disappointment, they were tough and bland, and could have fared better if they were marinated or seasoned. Still, this was one of the best naengmyeon we’ve had in Singapore.

Sausage Stew with Aged Kimchi
We ended with a staple crowd favourite, army stew! Most people are sure to like this, probably with the exception of people who can’t consume spicy food. The army stew here was nicely gelled together, with a good mix of the standard ingredients that made it a really nice dish. The meal felt very homely and warm, feeling like a home cooked dish that was comforting. It was a great dish to end on as it made the meal feel wholesome.

Eee Mo BBQ

Overall, the dishes at Eee Mo BBQ was really good, the Yangnyeom Chicken reminded me of the quality of chicken I had in Korea, whilst the Mul Nangmyeon allowed me to savour great cold noodles in Singapore that could be said to have even been better than some restaurants in Korea. The army stew was decent, and of acceptable standard and really brought the meal to a nice wholesome end and the banchan was perfect, being a great compliment to the dishes we ordered.

We would recommend anyone who had not had good Korean food to come by and try the dishes at least once to experience the range of cooking style that Korean food has to offer.
