Daiyusan Sushi Bar – Japanese Restaurant in the Heartlands

Located at an industrial building behind Tai Seng, it is a short walk away from the MRT station and is on the 2nd floor of the building. The restaurant is facing the main road so look out for the purple neon sign if you’re taking the bus to get there. The walk is a good warm-up before the meal and will help with digestion after. With the focus on affordability and freshness you can be sure to expect a decent meal here.

Crab Meat Chawanmushi
The Crab Meat Chawanmushi was really soft and contained a fair amount of crab meat. Other than containing a fair amount of other ingredients like ginkgo nuts, prawn roe and such, the stew used was also of a unique flavour. For us, we weren’t a fan of the stew used as it felt too salty and overwhelming for us as it covered the taste of the steamed egg.

Kaisen Don
This is probably the most value-for-money dish at Daiyusan with a large variety of sashimi slices and the slices tasting fresh. The rice used was seasoned differently, had sesame seeds sprinkled within and had a different taste from the standard sushi rice. It came as a shock as it was so different, we had mixed feelings about it as one of us preferred the standard sushi rice whilst the other felt that this new mix was an interesting experience.

Premium Uni Chirashi Zushi
A chirashi don with quite a fair bit of uni, it’s a great choice for someone who has not had uni before due to the large variety of sushi as well as uni given. Uni is an acquired taste and has a unique texture so if you’ve never tried it before, you might want to share it with a friend in case you don’t like it. The sushi was quite fresh, especially the scallops but the rice was the same as with the kaisen don and we were not sure about our feelings for it.

Daiyusan Sushi Bar

Overall, Daiyusan is a good place to dine if you’ve not tried it. With a different concept on its dishes, you can give it a try to see if you prefer this over the traditional standard Japanese fares. It is definitely worth trying at least once to see how it tastes but whether it is right for you to come back for more depends on your tastes.
