Chong Qing Grilled Fish is a well known chain restaurant in Singapore for those who are fans of spicy and bold flavors. The restaurant specializes in the traditional Chongqing-style grilled fish, which is known for its fiery and numbing Szechuan pepper seasoning. The original outlet is located at Chinatown, just minutes away from Chinatown MRT station.
The restaurant also offers a variety of non-spicy dishes, such as stir-fry vegetables, to balance out the heat. With its lively atmosphere, friendly staff, and delicious food, Chong Qing Grilled Fish is a great spot for a casual dinner or a night out with friends.
Spicy Fragrant Qing Jiang Fish (一品香辣清江鱼)
The chong qing grilled fish was nicely grilled and placed into a spicy and savoury soup, leaving the skin lightly crispy and the flesh juicy. The bold flavours of the chong qing soup paired well with the delicate taste of the fish.
The unique and bold flavours left a fiery kick that had our taste buds burning. The heat level can be customised to your preference, making it a great dish for those who love spice in their food.
Cereal Prawns (麦片虾)
Cereal prawns, also known as cereal butter prawns, consists of deep-fried prawns coated in a crispy cereal batter. The cereal prawns batter was prepared by marinating the prawns in a mixture of spices and flour, before being coated in cereal and deep-fried to perfection. It added a unique crunch to the dish, complementing the juicy prawns. The dish was quite filling, with a large amount of prawns given, so it’s best to share it among a group.
Spicy Chicken Cubes (辣子鸡)
Spicy chicken cubes, commonly known as la zi ji, is known for its fiery and numbing spice level, which is achieved by using Sichuan peppercorns in the marinade. This dish was no exception as the numbing (ma) flavour hit us strong and left us with a tingling sensation on the tongue.
The dish had many bite-sized pieces of boneless chicken that were deep-fried and then tossed in a spicy sauce made with chili peppers, garlic, and other seasonings. Whilst lots of chilli could be seen in the dish, the killer is usually the numbing (ma) flavour and not the spicy (la) flavour. So if you feel the tingles it’s due to small round brown balls called sichuan peppercorns. It’s a lovely dish to have if you can handle the heat.

Chong Qing Grilled Fish
Overall, Chong Qing Grilled Fish is a place worth visiting. Their grilled fish was expertly prepared and properly grilled, resulting in a slightly crispy skin and firm fish meat. The chong qing sauce stood out, adding a complex blend of flavours to the dish.
The spicy chicken cubes were a hit among our group, making us order two servings of it. The spiciness was alright, however, the numbing sensation was a little on the strong side.
The cereal prawns were decent, with a crispy and crunchy texture that paired well with the sweetness of the prawns. If you’re a fan of spicy and strong flavours, Chong Qing Grilled Fish will be sure to suit your palate well.
