When talking about Korean Fried Chicken, you can’t miss out on Chicken Up. Chicken Up has been in the Korean Fried Chicken scene for many years, since 2010. It has always been a family friendly environment good for people to come by with their families if they are craving some Korean chicken.
As a staple flavour, we opted for Yangnyum Up, the lightly sweet, and spicy Korean fried chicken style that was a hot favourite amongst fried chicken flavours. The chicken was tender on the inside and the taste was well spread out throughout the chicken, however the skin was a little towards the soggy side and wasn’t as crispy as would have been preferred.
For the non spice eaters, we got soya ganjang as a flavour which was a type of Korean soy sauce base. We got the popcorn chicken wondering if it was any different from the normal chicken and we found out it was still soft and tender. Being popcorn chicken, it was easier to eat since we didn’t have to deal with the bones.
The bulgogi fries were layered with bulgogi and cheese, with onions and spring onions as toppings. The fries were a little on the soft side and were not fried crisp enough. The mix of the meat and sauce was sweet and savoury and yet at the same time, the taste could have been better if the fries were more crisp and crispy.
We also had kimchi pancake as a side dish to go along with the chicken and fries. The pancake was crispy on the outside and yet it was still nice and soft on the inside. The pancake was quite thick, hence giving the two layers their different textures. There was a distinct kimchi taste and a light spice level that helped meld the dish together.
Chicken Up
As a place featuring Korean fried chicken, Chicken Up serves great pieces of chicken and a variety of other sides that go along well with it. As one of the earlier restaurants that helped build up the Korean fried chicken trend in Singapore, Chicken Up still keeps up the standard of Korean fried chicken suited to Singaporean taste.
