Tucked away at a corner of Serangoon, you won’t expect to find a Taiwanese bistro along this stretch of shophouses as it looked unassuming. Named after Jay Chou’s album, 8 Degrees is known for having Taiwanese dishes that taste really authentic. There is usually a queue during meal hours so do drop by earlier if you wish to avoid the queue.

With a clean, polished and sleek interior design, the place gave a very chill and laid back feel, good to drop by and have bubble tea whilst chatting with your friends. As a Taiwanese bistro, you’ll be able to find the common Taiwanese dishes, drinks and even desserts to share together.

Being the main featured item on their menu, we had to try their signature pork belly rice. The bowl came looking unassuming with small pieces of pork belly, an egg and pickles. The meat packed a punch even though it looked small, with the fatty bits being savoury and sweet. When mixed in, the taste of the fats from the pork belly would leave you wanting more.

The oyster mee sua was reminiscent of the famous mee sua noodles in Taiwan. We added fried onions and vinegar to tweak the taste to our preference, the broth tasted similar to the one in Taiwan. However, we would have preferred the broth to be stronger as we found that even after adding the condiments, it still tasted a little bland.

The prawn fried rice with pork floss was interesting, with lots of small shrimps fried within. The taste of the shrimps and eggs blended well together with the pork floss as a topping. The crunchy bits of floss added a clean and crisp mouthfeel to the dish but the floss actually tasted a little stronger than the aroma of the fried rice.

We had the fried brinjal with pork floss and chicken cutlet for sides to go with the dishes. The brinjals were really enjoyable and were fried till a nice golden brown. The outer layer gave a crisp texture whilst the insides were soft and light. The chicken cutlet was fried crisp with the chicken within, the meat was decent but didn’t have anything special to shout about.

If you’re craving for a good bowl of braised pork belly rice (卤肉饭), you can drop by here if you’re near Serangoon. The fried brinjal is also a great dish to share around with and pairs really well with the braised pork belly rice. If you’re a fan of oyster mee sua, you can give their version a try, but we felt it was a little on the bland side. Do give their bubble teas and dessert a shot as well if you’re here to chill with friends!
