The garlic crayfish dish from 57 Mala Xiang Guo came in a large tray filled with a generous amount of crayfish. The moment the dish arrived at our table, the aroma of garlic and spices wafted towards us. The crayfish were well cooked, with a liberal amount of garlic layered all over them.
Each bite was bursting with flavor and the meat was succulent and juicy. The sauce was savory, with a hint of sweetness from the crayfish. A wide spread of vegetables and tofu ingredients laid below it, going well to help balance the dish with a variety of different textures.

The chong qing grilled fish from 57 Mala Xiang Guo was an absolute delight. The fish was grilled and steeped in the sauce that made it both spicy and savoury with a hint of smokiness from the grilling. It was grilled to a nice crispy skin layer and a soft, tender and juicy inside.
The fish was seasoned well, with bold and complex flavours. The grilled fish also came with a large variety of ingredients. You may also choose to add in additional mala xiang guo ingredients into the dish as well. The only drawback about the dish was the amount of bones in the fish, which could be changed by ordering the type of fish with lesser bones.

We ended the meal with vegetables to keep it a more balanced meal. The stir fried long beans was a simple yet delicious combination of stir-fried long beans and spices. The long beans were crispy and tender, with a nice bite to it. The spices used in the dish were well balanced, it was not too spicy but still had a nice kick to it.

Overall, if you’re looking for mala xiang guo, their mala was a great blend of numbness, spiciness and savouriness. The ala carte dishes were great, with it leaning more towards the spicy side but providing lots of flavour for the dish. Their crayfish especially was flavourful with a hint of sweetness, it left you wanting more with the only drawback being you’d have to peel the shells to get to the meat of another piece. If you’re not a fan of peeling shells to get to the delicious meat within, crayfish is not a dish for you as there isn’t much meat within. Whilst it’s not something you’d want to travel just to try, it’s a great choice for a meal if you’re in the area and chance upon one of their outlets.
