When it comes to Singapore’s culinary heritage, few dishes hold a candle to the beloved national favorite – laksa. Singaporeans take immense pride in their unique twist on this dish, known as Katong laksa. This culinary gem was crafted by the Peranakan community residing in the Eastside neighborhood and has gained international acclaim, thanks in part to the famous showdown in 2013 when 328 Katong Laksa faced off against none other than Chef Gordon Ramsay during the Singtel Hawker Heroes challenge – and emerged victorious!

Laksa 叻沙 (Small: $6.30 | Big: $8.30)
This dish sets itself apart from other regional variants of laksa in a few distinctive ways. It boasts an aromatic, coconut-based broth infused with hae bee (dried shrimp), a mouthwatering combination that leaves a lasting impression. Toppings range from succulent shrimp to flavorful cockles, but what truly catches the eye is the fact that Katong laksa is meant to be enjoyed with a spoon rather than chopsticks. The noodles are finely chopped, allowing you to savor them with every spoonful.

The origins of this beloved dish trace back to the 1960s when two visionary brothers, Ng Juat Swee and Ng Chwee Seng, started selling it under the name Janggut Laksa along East Coast Road. As Katong laksa gained popularity, a wave of competing establishments emerged in the 1990s. Among them, 328 Katong Laksa shone brightly. Established just over two decades ago, it has since outshone many of its counterparts. The credit goes to its founder, Nancy Koh, who spent six months perfecting the Katong laksa recipe through relentless trial and error. Eventually, she launched the original 328 Katong Laksa outlet on East Coast Road.

Now, the real question: how much does this delightful bowl of Katong laksa cost? A small serving comes at a reasonable $6.30, while the larger portion is priced at $8.30. These prices ensure that everyone can indulge in this delicious culinary journey.

What sets 328 Katong Laksa apart is its lemak (rich and creamy) coconut gravy, beautifully swirled with chili and prawn oil. The noodles are a pleasure to slurp, accompanied by an array of ingredients, including plump shrimp, flavorful cockles and fishcake. For seafood enthusiasts, there’s even an option to upgrade to premium seafood items like flower clams for just $8.30.
