Charlie’s Peranakan Food is currently located at Golden Mile Food Centre, within walking distance from Lavender MRT. It first started way back in the 1980s when Uncle Charlie learnt to cook Peranakan food from his mom and started his first stall in Bukit Merah.

The store is managed by Uncle Charlie and his wife, with Uncle Charlie showing intense focus in cooking the dishes well to keep us satisfied. Compared to most Peranakan food places, you’d be pleased to find authentic dishes at prices that don’t break the bank at all!

Menu
With a wide variety of dishes available, you can even talk to them for recommendations to see what to try, or just order a few dishes and get surprised. They have many traditional Peranakan dishes like Beef Rendang, Ngoh Hiang, Chap Chye, Nangka Lemak, Babi Ponteh and much more…

Ayam Buah Keluak ($12)
We came by and ordered two dishes today, the first dish we had was the ayam buah keluak. Buah keluak is a seed from a tree commonly found in Indonesia that has an earthy taste with a slightly bitter but nutty aroma to it. The ayam buah keluak makes use of this ingredient to have a chicken dish that is aromatic, complex and unique.

The chicken was cooked til it was really soft and tender, and it had also absorbed the earthy and nutty distinct taste that the buah keluak is known for. The buah keluak is also mashed into a paste and left within the hollow shell. If you’re looking to explore Peranakan cuisine and would like to try something different and unique, buah keluak dishes are sure to intrigue you and your taste buds.

Chap Chye ($5)
Chap chye is a special peranakan mixed vegetables stew made of different vegetables and mushrooms cooked together with beancurd skin. The vegetables were really cooked til they were soft and tender and absorbed the stew sauce really well. The chap chye had a depth of flavour that seemed to leave you assaulted by multiple different flavours at once.

The texture was light and soft, with the cabbage being slightly chewy and the beancurd skin providing a different mouthfeel that contrasted greatly with the vegetables. The black fungus especially added a light touch that blended well with the vegetables.
